Black, she said by way of explanation, had lost its power. You could find it, after all, anywhere and everywhere, "even in a corner at Gap". Kawakubo has since returned to black again and again however, and the classic pieces most immediately associated with Comme des Garcons today kilts, dhoti pants, narrow jackets with Peter Pan collars and slogan T shirts are for the most part designed in black.
Now Comme des Garcons (French for 'like the boys') the 40 year old Japanese fashion label headed by Rei Kawakubo, has decided that black is officially the colour of summer.

The House of Chanel, also known as Chanel, is a Parisian fashion house founded by Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel (Wikipedia). Her life could be compared to that of a fairytale. The international fashion legacy started off from humble beginnings. Chanel was raised in a French orphanage and learned to sew at her convent school. She began to make hats that she would defiantly wear to races (Chanel). People began to take notice and the spark was lit that would change the fashion world forever. She began making the simple, customized boaters for friends and acquaintances (Chanel). She met Arthur Capel, a wealthy socialite, who helped her open her first hat shop (Joseph). During the Great Depression, Coco Chanel, with help from Arthur Capel, opened up her first shop on rue Cambon (Joseph). Her fashion became known for "prioritizing freedom of movement by not featuring ostentation and redundance in her designs" (Wikipedia). She established Chanel's original, fluid and comfortable lines (Wikipedia). Elite women from around the world began to flock to the now legendary store to commission couture garments from her (Wikipedia). The House of Chanel became an icon of elegance. "Chanel" from that point on was synonymous to elegance, wealth and elitism the ultimate sign of French high class (Wikipedia). In 1939, Coco Chanel retired from fashion design and closed her couture house, selling only perfumes and accessories at the boutiques. This quickly prompted protests from around the world (Wikipedia). Fifteen years later, a 70 year old Chanel returned from retirement and re opened the couture house (Wikipedia). Her first show post retirement received international praise, where she also introduced her signature jersey suit that bore her favorite number: 5. In 1955, she introduced the bag that took the fashion world by storm: the quilted bad with the shoulder strap. It became so popular in the first year that she had to decline numerous requests due to the lack of time to meticulously manufacture each one by her skilled artisans (Wikipedia). The fashion world named Chanel the "most influential designer of the twentieth century" by awarding her with the Fashion Oscar in 1957. On January 10, 1971 Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel passed away, leaving behind a thriving company and legend. One of the most iconic designers of our time, Karl Lagerfeld, emerged as the new Artistic Director for CHANEL Couture, Ready to Wear, and Accessories in 1983 (Chanel). He came into the couture house with a strong vision of a new Chanel. "He shocked the world by changing Chanel's fashion lines from the predictable same styles to funky cuts and eye capturing designs" (Wikipedia).
